About The Author

Carol Westfahl has survived cancer twice, first in 1996, and again after a recurrence in 2002.  Her experiences as a patient are shared in the hope of making the cancer journey easier for others.  She is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is retired from state service after 27 years. She lives in Wisconsin near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Diagnosis is an opinion, not a prediction.  What it will mean remains to be seen. We need to be careful about how we think, because our lives are shaped by our thoughts.  We need to cancel negative thoughts and try to think positively.   -Chapter 5

Isn't it just common sense to be an activist patient? After all is said and done, no one cares more about the outcome of our treatment than we do.  Knowledge and understanding is basic to empowerment. Being empowered permits us to participate in decisions and allows us some sense of control.   -Chapter 6
